  17. <p>     Inflamed by tax squabbles, water fights and rampant
  18. north-south snobbery, Californians who can't get along often
  19. talk about cutting the state in half. Usually they imagine a
  20. line midway, somewhere around Monterey. But Stan Statham, a
  21. Republican assemblyman from far-north Redding, wants more
  22. radical surgery. He would draw the border above Sacramento for
  23. a new 51st state called Northern California. But that would
  24. leave most of the state's economic hubs--including Los
  25. Angeles, San Francisco and Silicon Valley--in the new state
  26. to the south. Hey Stan, whose side are you on?
